【摘要】:Theapparatuskeepsthecross-sectionalareaoftheshearsurfaceconstantduringshearandshearsthespecimencontinuouslyinonerotationaldirectionforanymagnitudeofdisplacement.Thisallowsclayparticlestobecomeorientedparalleltothedirectionofshearandaresidualstrengthconditiontodevelop.Theapparatusallowsareconstitutedspecimentobeoverconsolidatedandpreshearedpriortodrainedshearing.Thissimulatesthefieldconditionsthatleadtoapreexistingshearsurfacealongwhichthedrainedresidualstrengthcanbemobilized.Theringsheartestissuitedtotherelativelyrapiddeterminationofdrainedresidualshearstrengthbecauseoftheshortdrainagepaththroughthethinspecimen,andthecapabilityoftestingonespecimenunderdifferentnormalstressestoquicklyobtainashearstrengthenvelope.Thetestresultsareprimarilyapplicabletoassesstheshearstrengthinslopesthatcontainapreexistingshearsurface,suchasoldlandslides,andshearedbeddingplanes,joints,orfaults.Note18212;Notwithstandingthestatementsonprecisionandbiascontainedinthistestmethod:Theprecisionofthistestmethodisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingitandthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetenttesting.UsersofthistestmethodarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotensurereliabletesting.Reliabletestingdependsonseveralfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodprovidesaprocedureforperformingatorsionalringsheartestunderadrainedconditiontodeterminetheresidualshearstrengthofcohesivesoils.Anundisturbedspecimencanbeusedfortesting.However,obtaininganaturalslipsurfacespecimen,determiningthedirectionoffieldshearing,andtrimmingandproperlyaligningtheusuallynon-horizontalshearsurfaceintheringshearapparatusisdifficult.Asaresult,thistestmethodfocusesontheuseofareconstitutedspecimentomeasuretheresidualstrength.Thistestmethodisperformedbydeformingapresheared,reconstitutedspecimenatacontrolleddisplacementrateuntiltheconstantminimumdrainedshearresistanceisofferedonasingleshearplanedeterminedbytheconfigurationoftheapparatus.Anunlimitedamountofcontinuoussheardisplacementcanbeachievedtoobtainaresidualstrengthcondition.Generally,threeormorenormalstressesareappliedtoatestspecimentodeterminethedrainedresidualfailureenvelope.Aseparatetestspecimenmaybeusedforeachnormalstress.1.2Ashearstress-displacementrelationshipmaybeobtainedfromthistestmethod.However,ashearstress-strainrelationshiporanyassociatedquantity,suchasmodulus,cannotbedeterminedfromthistestmethodbecausepossiblesoilextrusionandvolumechangepreventsdefiningtheheightneededintheshearstraincalculations.Asaresult,shearstraincannotbecalculatedbutsheardisplacementcanbecalculated.1.3Theselectionofnormalstressesandfinaldeterminationoftheshearstrengthenvelopefordesignanalysesandthecriteriatointerpretandevaluatethetestresultsaretheresponsibilityoftheengineerorofficerequestingthetest.1.4ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsareapproximated.1.5AllmeasuredandcalculatedvaluesshallconformtotheguidelinesforsignificantdigitsandroundingestablishedinPracticeD6026.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistherespo......
